Teaching Philosophy

As an educator, I want my students to become engaged in the class and immersed in what they are learning. My students should come out of my class with a positive attitude or an appreciation for the topics they learned. I want to be creative in my teaching approaches to appeal the subject matter to all students. My goal is to instill a mindset where my students can think like scientists and be able to apply their knowledge to real life scenarios. I want to encourage peer collaboration through cooperative groups and help students develop skills necessary for working with members of a team.
I plan on using effective classroom management techniques with my classes to keep students actively engaged while encouraging positive behavior and a safe and supportive learning environment. I want to improve scientific literacy with my students and encourage lifelong learning that accompanies the curiosities of science.
When students look back on my class, I do not want or expect them to remember everything. I want them to apply concepts they learned and use scientific reasoning to deduce answers to questions. Students from my class should be able to think abstractly about science and see connections between what they learned in class and what happens in the world.
Science teachers throughout my education instilled a passion for science in me, which is what drove me to become a science teacher myself. I want to be that teacher for my students who is so passionate about what they teach so as to make students want to learn. I want to be patient with my students and help them develop into critical thinkers and problem solvers. I want students to remember my class as a positive experience in their education where they developed confidence in themselves and a place where they learned to love science.
